Pedestrian struck and killed by police cruiser

FLORIDA CITY, Fla. (WSVN) -- Authorities are investigating a fatal accident after a police officer slammed his cruiser into a pedestrian Saturday night.

Miami-Dade Police are investigating an accident, which occurred in the area of Southwest 344th Street and 9th Avenue, killing 67-year-old Jose Munoz.

According to witnesses, the 67-year-old was crossing the street with his wife after getting food from a gas station when he was hit. Raul Alvarez said he saw the accident and noted the cruiser did not have its emergency lights on and was traveling at high speeds when it hit the man. "The old man got clipped by a Metro Dade. I don't know why he clipped him like that. The man was walking from the gas station going home, Metro Dade was riding with no lights on and clipped the old man. That man flipped three times in the air," Alvarez described.

Rescue crews airlifted Munoz to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he later died.

There are conflicting reports of the speed of the officer and whether or not he had emergency lights on. Investigators are trying to figure out exactly how it happened.

Police have not released the name of the officer who was driving the unmarked police cruiser.
